Every year CCA and the Dutch Consulate come together to host a series of workshops for CCA students. I was fortunate enough to participate in the Graphic Design workshop lead by Chantal and Marijke of Cobbenhagen Hendrickson studio from Amsterdam.
The premise of the workshop was to create a cohesive body of work as a group. We created a series called the ABC primer, which was based on a similar series of work that Cobbenhagen Hendrickson studio was showing at The NWBLK San Francisco. We were each assigned a letter of the alphabet and asked to choose a word from that letter that was representative of our design process or style of working. I was assigned the letter K. Kinetic represents the way that I work: full of energy and moving parts. We then made decisions as a group for the placement and typeface of the letters.
Participating in group critiques and talking with Chantal and Marijke was incredibly inspiring. They have the most wonderful working relationship where they compliment each others’ working styles perfectly, finish each other’s sentences and always say “we”. Collaboration is such an important aspect of design and it was great example to see it done so harmoniously. Chantal and Marijke take a very ethical approach to design and have a lot of honor and respect for their work and for each other.
The body of work that was produced was incredible. The Dutch Consulate was so impressed with the work that they are including our poster series in the Amsterdam/San Francisco night at the De Young Museum.
